52 Blocks goes by several names: Jailhouse Rock, Comstock, Closing Gates. What all the names share is an origin story rooted in the American prison system and, before that, in the martial traditions of enslaved Africans brought to the Americas. It has no founder you can name with certainty, no written curriculum, no governing body, and no official tournaments. What it has is a documented presence in Brooklyn gang culture from the 1970s onward, references throughout Wu-Tang Clan's catalog, a connection to the 1987 Lethal Weapon fight scene, and a technical logic built entirely around surviving in tight spaces with no rules and no referee.
